Risala Endowment Fund Initiative

In the United States, endowments are often integral to the financial health of private educational institutions. Throughout Islamic History, endowments, or Waqfs, were used to fund many educational institutions and hospitals. The Waqf for these types of institutions primarily would come from wealthy individuals, families or profits from a business that were dedicated solely for funding the institution. This system allowed for education and health care to be made free to the public.
The goal of the Risala Institute is to revive this Waqf system in an effort to provide free high quality Islamic education to the community. It is estimated that 95% of Muslim children in the US attend public schools. This is largely due to many parents not being able to afford private Islamic school tuition. Due to much of the negative peer influence experienced within the public school system, many youth eventually turn away from the morals taught to them by their parents and their religion.
The total monthly operating expenses of The Risala Institute are approximately $18,000. Tuition is currently the primary means of income to cover these expenses. With an endowment fund of at least $18,000 being contributed each month or $216,000 per year, the Risala Institute can begin to establish this system of tuition-free Islamic education.
